Caribbean Gardens Trade Day
Episode: #3 07/04/07
Presenter: Melissa King
Have you ever wondered where garden centres come to source the latest and greatest plants and products? Every month hundreds of people from the Nursery and Garden Industry, be it landscapers, florists or nurseries gather at the Caribbean Gardens for Trade Day. It is a mecca for garden lovers.
Before you get too excited, the Caribbean Gardens Trade Day is not open to the public, but Melissa gives you a sneak peak at what you might find in garden centres this autumn.
There is always something exciting to discover among roses. The Golden Iceberg Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Golden Iceberg’) has the same continuous flowering and great disease resistance as the Classic White Iceberg Rose but it is a rich golden yellow colour with few thorns. The flowers just keep on coming even in shadier spots.
You do not need much intuition to know that the Red IntuitionTM Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Red Intuition TM ‘) is a top rose. It is one of the Delbard roses, so it is French, fragrant and fabulous. It is part of the painter’s collection which is inspired by the great French impressionists and up close the flowers look like a work of art. ‘Red Intuition’ has the most beautiful, perfectly shaped hybrid tea blooms; it is the ultimate cut flower.
Water tanks have become a must have backyard accessory; they are no longer something to hide and there is a lot of innovation around. Look for an integrated unit that has a controller and submersible pump all built in, so it is ready to go.
Old-fashioned plants are enjoying a revival in popularity and geraniums (Pelargonium Hybrid Cultivar) have always had a special place in gardener’s hearts. They are showy, ooze Mediterranean style and bring intense colour to the garden. For a modern twist on an old favourite look out for ‘Piccolo’ Geraniums (Appleblossom), they are more compact and just keep on flowering!
Trade Day is always a hive of activity and for nurseries and garden centres it is the place to be if you want to source the best new plants and products and the beauties Melissa discovered, is just a taste of what you will be seeing at your local garden centre soon.
