What To Do
Episode: #3 07/04/07
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Have you noticed how gorgeous the frangipanis are looking in gardens this year? They have a lot going for them and maybe the perfect choice for a spot in your garden.
To highlight some of the amazing varieties available to buy this year, Sue visits Tony and Sons Nursery. Michael has been growing Frangipanis for many years and is passionate about them.
In the Frangipani range the most popular is the traditional White (Plumeria rubra) which is very high in perfume. Another favourite is the Fruit Salad Frangipani (Plumeria rubra ‘Fruit Salad’) which has a lovely apricot flower.
The Blood Red Frangipani (Plumeria rubra ‘Blood Red’) which is not so common yet, is also becoming very popular and it puts out a beautiful show.
Then there is the Evergreen Frangipani (Plumeria obtusa ‘Singapore White’) which does loose its leaves in winter in Perth but the perfume on the flowers is worth having in any garden.
Another one of the tough plants in the nursery is Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae). The striking orange and purple flowers stand out above the foliage for months. If you have and advanced plant in your garden they can be split up to make more but the roots are strong so you will need a quality pruning saw or a sharp axe and strong muscles. Each piece only needs to have a few roots on it and it will to grow.
If you grow the plants from seed they take years to flower and many people are not that patient so by doing this you are guaranteed of flowers almost immediately.
How many of you have a Dracaena that has a single trunk and you look longingly at the bushy ones? The straggly ones can be trimmed at any place. The marks on the stems are leaf scars, so under each one there are dormant buds, as soon as the trunk is cut the buds will start to swell and soon new leaves will appear. Just remember to do it while the weather is warm so it does not rot.
Modern day gardening is all about choosing the plants that can cope in today’s conditions, and Yucca’s (Yucca elephantipes) are the perfect choice for the spot in the garden that may be neglected.
If you are wanting some more ideas, call into your local garden centre and pick up the latest edition of the Garden Gurus Newspaper.
