Presenter: Melissa King

Poynton’s Nursery
is a little piece of history in Essendon. The nursery has been located on the site by the Maribyrnong River since 1935 but these days, the Water Saver Garden Centre is all about contemporary living.

Melissa guarantees that a visit to this nursery will inspire you to create a modern, beautiful living space and that means choosing the right plants and applying some simple water saving strategies.

The old-fashioned plant with a modern appeal, the Perennial Statice (Limonium perezii ‘Perezii Blue’), has a great tall cluster of tiny, deep mauve flowers in autumn. They are very pretty and papery to touch. If you want a good looking plant with full sun that is low maintenance then the Perezii is a great choice because once established it needs barely any water.

In the wild, Euphorbias have it tough, so you can always rely on them in the garden. The Diamond Frost Euphorbia (Euphorbia leucocephala cv. ‘Diamond Frost’) is a proven performer.

Mel has the ‘Diamond Frost’ variety growing in pots in the garden and it just does not stop flowering. It thrives in the heat and drought and has a lovely compact habit so it is one of those easy care plants that deserve a place in the garden.

Of course colour does not just come in the form of flowers. Mel has been watching the Libertia (Libertia ixioides ‘Goldfinger’) in gardens this summer and it has stood up really well to the heat and dry. ‘Goldfinger’ has the most striking coloured foliage with a tufted weeping form, perfect on mass or as a border.

Pomegranates are on of those fruits that look just magic hanging from the branches. As far as Mel is concerned they should be planted more, particularly these days because they do not need much water. Plus you get evergreen foliage and sweetly perfumed flowers. Dwarf pomegranates (Punica granatum ‘Nana’) only grow to around one metre tall so they make great potted plants.

When is comes to water saving ‘Solid Water’ is a really unique invention, it was a technology developed for planting trees in deserts.

With about 97 percent water and the rest is a kind of polymer, all you do is cut it in half, it is totally biodegradable, so just put it in the ground either side of the root ball and with the help of microbes, the "solid water" gradually dissolves and waters the plant.
