Trees

Episode: Easter Special 8/4/07

Scientists are telling us that currently in our atmosphere carbon levels are at a six hundred and fifty thousand year high and our politicians are talking about ways to reduce greenhouse emissions but Trevor has a great way to take carbon out of the air and it is easy and we can all play a roll.

The reasons the levels fell from their peak six hundred and fifty thousand years ago was the planet was covered in trees then. The trees take carbon from the air adding valuable oxygen which improves our ability to think. So it is not surprising that we have a problem now that we burn so much carbon based fuel and we have cleared seventy percent of the trees that once grew here.

To plat your part planting trees is one very good thing and if we all got up in the morning and went out to our local garden centre and bought a tree and planted it, in twelve months time three hundred million kilos of carbon would be taken out of the atmosphere.

Trees can do so much for a landscape and can reduce the surrounding temperature by up to 10 degrees. By cooling the house and garden reduces energy consumption and keeps you cool in summer, saving you money on power bills. They also reduce evaporation by shading and protecting the garden from wind. This reduces water consumption which is a critical factor in the new world climate that we are going to have to get used to living in.
