Cranbourne Botanic Gardens – Australian Garden
Presenter: Melissa King
Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne showcases the best of Australia’s flora, art, architecture and waterwise design. If you need another reason to visit then it has just been named the Top New Tourist Development in Australia at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards!
A visit is like taking a journey through some of Australia’s most prominent landscapes and it starts in the Red Sand Garden. Nothing says Australia quite like it. The large expanse of sand is dotted with clumps of daisies and tough grey leafed plants that provide a superb contrast in colour.
The sand garden is eventually met by the dry river walk, where you can see a greater diversity of flora; from colourful bird attracting kangaroo paws to pretty fan flowers and prostrate growing banksias.
There is a lot of symbolism in the garden’s design too, like the dry and flowing rock pool waterways, representing the ephemeral nature of water in the Australian landscape.
When it comes to take home inspiration, there is definitely no shortage. There is a series of Exhibition Gardens and each shows you a different ways to use Australian plants in the landscape.
The Diversity Garden showcases the richness of Australia’s flora, both visually and botanically and takes you on an abstract journey through the various climatic and vegetation types of Australia.
The Future Garden takes both a retrospective and a futuristic look at the development of Australian Plants from the long lost Wollemi Pine to plants developed using the latest horticultural techniques.
Then there is the home garden, which demonstrates how Australian plants can be used in gardens of different styles and periods.
Once you have explored the Australian garden there is always the surrounding 363 hectares of natural bush to get through. All together a trip to the Australian Garden in Cranbourne is a truly unique experience.
