Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens
Presenter: Kim Syrus
If you love the changing season and autumn toned leaves, then head 15 minutes up the freeway and visit the best cool climate garden in the state. The higher rainfall and acidic soils makes Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens the ideal place for growing these ever brilliant plants.
Set amongst natural bush land, it covers 97 hectares and is absolutely filled with a diverse range of plants from Australia and around the world. Cool climate loving deciduous and evergreen plants blend to create an ever changing mix of colour and shape. The Gardens are divided into distinct regions, each a unique showcase of a specialized plant type or geographic location.
The Rhododendron Walk, nestled in a small gully, is home to over 800 different species. From large tree specimens through to ground covering shrubs, the plants are now filled with masses of new buds ready to burst into colour.
One of Kim’s favourite spots at Mount Lofty is the Dwarf Conifer Garden. It is a place that creates instant impact and an amazing vista all without a single flower in sight.
Conifers of all types are planted side by side on the gently undulating slopes. Shades of green, blue and grey combine with unique growth habits, unusual leaf types and very different textures.
Another favourite spot is Fern Gully, it is like going back in time to when dinosaurs ruled the planet. You will find the true survivors of the plant world as well as one of the richest fern collections, in Australia.
The Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is full of surprises, so pack a picnic basket and pick up a brochure to discover the many different ways you can explore these magnificent gardens.
