Your Garden Questions Answered
Presenter: Nigel Ruck
Barry from Parramatta is having trouble with unsightly weeds growing in between his pavers and also algae and moss on the surface that is a bit slippery. Barry wants to know how to get rid of them effectively. This is a common problem that Nigel gets asked about all the time. Here are some tips to getting your pavers back on track.
Weeds find their way into the gaps between pavers through air borne seeds or off footwear. Their removal is just part of general paving maintenance and the trick is to get onto them early or you will end up with a bit of a mess!
Where people often go wrong is by pulling the top of weed out, which can sometimes leave the stubborn roots behind meaning the weed grows back again. It is better to hit them with a systemic herbicide like Yates Zero Once a Year Path Weed Gun which travels right through the plant killing all of it.
Herbicides are safe to use, just make sure you follow the instructions and choose a still, wind free day with no imminent rain as this will wash the herbicide away. If you don’t like using chemicals, boiling water has shown to be very successful too, just watch you don’t burn your feet.
Moss and algae are common problems in damp shady areas, and if they are left to grow out of control they can become very slippery and dangerous. To keep them under control you can use diluted house hold bleach, but this is not always effective on bad areas, so try a specialist moss and algae remover, like Yates Zero Moss & Algae Gun.
If you want to try and avoid moss or algae problems the best thing to do is when planning a garden consider an alternative surface in damp shady sorts of areas, and avoid porous materials like sandstone if you are concerned about moss and algae. Some sealing products can be a big help, but always check with the paver or tile manufacturer as to its suitable use, or ask what they recommend you use.
Sealers can help reduce staining too, but that does not make them entirely bullet proof, and some cleaning and stain removal will still be needed, especially if you are like me and do some hefty entertaining. Remember that the more porous the paver, the deeper the stain may penetrate, something to consider when choosing your pavers.
Household bleach, degreasers, detergents can all work well, or get a specialist cleaner from the hardware store. Trick is to get onto it as soon as possible.
