What To Do
Presenter: Phil Dudman
Phil thinks there is nothing better for your soil then giving it a good feed of something dreadfully smelly to get it primed ready to plant. Start by digging in Yates blood and bone and Yates Dynamic Lifter, then throw in some Yates Garden Lime. Now your soil is perfect for planting broccoli and cauliflower.
If you love broccoli, try the Garden Gurus Broccolette Branching Broccoli, they are multi-stemmed which means you get masses of long tender shoots, plus they are easy to grow. Just plant them about 30 cm apart and in no time, they will be leaping out of the ground.
Next were planting some of the most unusual cauliflowers (Gourmet Baby - Mini Cauliflower) Phil has ever seen. They are a miniature form with a small head so you will eat the lot in one meal. That means no more rubbery old half eaten cauliflower sitting around in the fridge and they will be ready for harvest in just weeks.
One of the best value crops to grow is peas because they take up little room. The Garden Gurus Honeysnap Peas are absolutely delicious and easy to grow, but they need a climbing frame to grow on and you can make one yourself out of garden stakes. Just bang them in the ground in a tripod shape and use some string to tie them together.
Phil added some lime to the soil for the peas because peas like a sweet soil but it is not necessary to add any high nitrogen fertilisers like blood and bone because they do not need it. Just a few tight fistfuls of Yates Sulphate of Potash is all they will need to help them produce the most beautiful pods.
To finish off the Vegetable patch, Phil plants the entire border with Baby Butter Lettuce. They will look terrific and they are excellent eating.
An absolute feast of winter vegetables on the way and you do not need much space. All I can say is get into your vegetable garden this weekend and make the most of these glorious growing conditions.
If you are looking for more good gardening ideas then check out the May issue of the Garden Guru Newspaper. Melissa reveals her favourite natives for winter colour, Trevor shows us his Singapore inspired tropical garden and Phil has got some handy tips for growing citrus in small gardens. So make sure you pick up your copy at Mitre 10 or any good garden centres.
