Your Garden Questions Answered

Presenter: Kim Syrus

John of Brighton is having a constant battle keeping his running lawn out of the garden and wants some advice on how to stop the invasion.

Edges are great at not only stopping an advancing lawn but also in defining and shaping the yard. Bricks are always a great choice as they easy to lay and readily available. Make sure you level off the base first before putting them along, then slurry of concrete along the back will help keep them in place.

Placing the mower wheels on the bricks when cutting, will keep the turf an even height all the way along and takes the strain out of pushing the mower around. Having the edge also makes it easy when using a whipper snipper and leaves the yard looking picture perfect.

Jill of Tusmore has a bird issue. They are scratching in the garden creating a real mess and keeping her constantly on broom patrol, so Jill here is a simple way to reduce the problem.

Place a piece of lawn edge in the offending area, this plastic strip is easy to bend and will not cause injury if stepped on. Make sure it is high enough out of the ground to create a barrier, stopping any disturbed soil or mulch from spilling out of the garden onto the lawn or paving.

A winter veggie ready to be planted out now is the new Garden Gurus Gourmet Baby Mini Cauliflower. This one loves Adelaide’s limey soil, just find a sunny well drained spot in your garden, plant out and get ready to harvest a bounty.

How do you mix gardening and the da Vinci Code, well the lovely healthy roses in the bed Kim visits are the variety Leonardo da Vinci Rose (Rosa, Modern Shrub, ‘Leonardo da Vinci’). There are 13 in total - 13 is a Fibonacci number, they have also been planted 987 cm apart - another Fibonacci number and, apparently the previous owner of this property was named Brown.

Ok….Kim is not quite sure about the previous owner’s name, but Kim does know this type of planting is a real talking point. It is always great doing something different in the garden and it certainly is. So maybe you might consider creating a cryptic challenge in your yard?

While it may not be the Da Vinci Code, the winter edition of the Garden Gurus Newspaper is guaranteed to have you reading from cover to cover. Pick up a copy now from good garden centres or your local Mitre 10 store.
