Your Garden Questions Answered
Episode: #8 19/05/07
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Kids love being in the garden just as much as adults do. It is a life long skill they can have with them forever. Sue is as Dawson’s Garden World in Forrestfield with some very enthusiastic kids from the Garden Gurus Garden Club to get their own gardening questions answered.
One enthusiastic boy brought along a very sad looking frangipani and doesn’t know what is wrong with it. Sue thinks he has been looking after it too well, and it has actually rotted, so what he needs to do is take it out of the pot cut off the dead leaves from the frangipani and put it back in the pot with some potting mix and it should shoot away beautifully.
A girl has some leaves from her Azalea shrub that has some ugly white spots on the leaves and is beginning to die. What that is, is damage from the Azalea lace bug, there is not much that you can do about the damaged leaves but you can stop the bug by spraying it with Confidor. To get rid of the damaged leaves just trim the shrub back.
Another member had branches off a mulberry tree that was recently planted and it is not doing very well at all. Sue thinks that it looks like it has just dried out and that not enough water is getting to the roots from not getting enough water.
Everybody loves roses and another girl has brought a rose cut off that looks as though the growth of the shoots have been stunted or distorted which looks as though it has damage from spray Glicosate shows that up typically so what you need to do is make sure that there hasn’t been any spray around it, cut it back and let it shoot away. IT will really need a seaweed extract too to get it to grow nice and strong and healthy.
Dawsons Forrestfield is a very special place it is a real botanic treasure and had been established on the site for over 100 years. One of the bonuses of a large garden centre is the display gardens. And I wanted to highlight how good the Sasanqua Camellias are.
Setsugekka Camellia (Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’) is pure white and the dark green foliage contrasts against the flowers making a spectacular show in autumn. Sasanqua camellias are the hardier variety of the Camellias and have smaller flowers, but are massed and look their best early in the season from April to July
Plantation Pink Camellia (Camellia sasanqua ‘Plantation Pink’) is soft pink with bright yellow stamens and Rose Ann Camellia (Camellia sasanqua ‘Rose Ann’) is a real head turner with its deep rose pink flowers. They make a thick bushy hedge and if you have limited space they grow for years in the same pot.
Dawsons have a great deal you can’t afford pass up, for a limited time you can buy 5 large pots of camellias for the price of 4, so that means you can fill up the whole garden! So get yourself down to Dawson’s and find out how versatile these plants really are and while you are there be sure to pick up their free catalogue with expert gardening tips.
