Your Garden Questions Answered – Lazy Weed Control

Episode: #8 19/05/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman

Phil visits a beautiful private garden ‘Mango Hill Farm’, in Peachester in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and it is open to the public tomorrow (Sunday 20th May) as part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme.

There are some terrific views from the garden and some lovely built elements in the garden as well. You will get to see a working mango and ginger farm in action as well. All the gardening and farming here is done using strict organic principles even the weed control.

Phil can think of a whole lot of other jobs he would rather be doing in the garden. So the big question is, is there an easier way to deal with weeds organically? Well yes there is, and Phil has a go at a method they use at Mango Hill Farm that is just perfect for lazy gardeners that Phil thinks he is.

It is called ‘sheet mulching’ and there is really nothing to it. You will need some materials for it, to start with a pair of pruning sheers, organic fertilisers like Yates blood and bone and Dynamic Lifter, a pile of old newspapers and some good organic mulch.

The Sheers are to trim the weeds right down to ground level, instead of carting the weeds away we are going to put them to good use and leave them here to break down into a rich humus, which will feed the soil. And just to help it along lets throw on some blood and bone and dynamic lifter as well, then water it all in.

Next, cover it all with newspaper and what that will do is starve the weeds of light so they have no choice but to give up and die. Don’t be shy, lay it on at least 7 or 8 sheets thick and make sure you overlap them so that nothing gets through.

All that is left to do now is cover it all with a good thick layer of mulch and then you are done, no more weeds, and the gardens had a good service as well.
