Your Garden Questions Answered

Episode: #8 19/05/07
Presenter: Nigel Ruck

We have had a lot of Garden Gurus fans and club members fascinated by perfumed plants, and why not the aromas and fragrances that some plants offer are simply mind blowing, so here is a few that might just tickle your nasal hairs.

One of the world’s most incredible aromas belongs to Gardenias there are all different and varieties. The one that Nigel thinks is the one that has the strongest perfume would have to be the Gardenia (Gardenia augusta ‘Florida’). They are very versatile plants. They will take full sun through to part shade in all different styles of gardens.

Because they are big eaters make sure you put lots of organic matter into the soil and that way you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers right through the warmer months. Because it is a bit later in the season they are only spot flowering, but Nigel promises that when they are in full bloom, the aroma will knock your sicks off!

A plant with a similar fragrance to gardenias is the Orange Jessamine (Murraya paniculate) which is a great hedging plant. Then there are the star Jasmine and the Wax Flower or Madagascar (Stephanotis floribunda) all having beautiful perfumed white flowers in the warmer months and all fairly easy to grow.

One beauty that is out of flower now, but Nigel thinks it would be very irresponsible of him not to mention one of natures finest, Frangipani (Plumeria rubra). They have a wonderful scent beautiful flowers and a long flowering period with good drought tolerance too.

There is also the Native Frangipani (Hymenosporum flavum) a rainforest tree with a sexy aroma!

For something a bit more unusual are the scented geraniums, Nigel thinks they are an interesting lot with all sorts of different foliage scented varieties including chocolate, vanilla, apple, lemon, lime, ginger, mint, rose, and nutmeg, you name it they have got it.

There is of course plenty more. There is lavender, port wine magnolia, heliotropes, and roses all offering a scent sensation.

One plant that is certainly worth looking at and a sniff is our plant of the month, the perfumed Cyclamen (Cyclamen, Hybrid Cultivar). What a plant it is, it has got a beautiful aroma wonderful colour. With a long flowering period from April right through to spring it means it is perfect to buy right now.

You can use it indoors or maybe as a plant to brighten up a spot outside through autumn and winter. It is a sensational plant that makes a great gift. If you head to Eden Gardens and buy one they will even gift wrap it for you even if it is just for yourself!
