Stunning Potted Bromeliads
Episode: #8 19/05/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman
Bromeliads have become hugely popular in Australia and it is not hard to see why they make the most fantastic displays.
They are an incredibly varied group too. Some have unique and exquisite flowers that can last for months on end. Others show their entire colour in the foliage and you can enjoy that all year round. But the thing that Phil think is fabulous about all bromeliads is their wonderful shapes and forms.
Most bromeliads look great just in a pot on their own but when you come across something special you have got to do it justice so choose a stylish pot to put it in you will get a really stunning look. Half the fun is mixing and matching to find the pots that match the plants.
When you found the pots you like, it is important to make sure they have got a decent drainage hole in the base, good drainage is the number one importance when growing bromeliads and the potting mix is important too. They like a fairly open mix, and you can make it yourself just blend Yate Thrive Orchid Potting Mix with Yates Thrive Premium Potting Mix about a 50:50 ratio mix is perfect. Then you will be ready to pot the Bromeliads.
You do not have to be too delicate when potting them the roots can handle a bit of rough treatment so shake off some old mix if you need to make them fit the pot. The best news about bromeliads is they are easy to care for, they don’t need much water, and when it is dry fill up the little cup that is in the centre of the plant and let it drain into the mix. Don’t over feed them either just a half strength liquid fertilizer Like the Yates Thrive Soluble All Purpose Liquid Fertiliser once a fortnight in spring and summer is all they need.
Now you can display bromeliads in a warm bright spot indoors if you like and right now in cold parts of the country that is probably the best spot but during the warmer months somewhere outdoors in dappled light is best.
So if you find yourself a nice bromeliad and a smart looking pot to match and you have got yourself a beautiful living sculpture.
