Ask Judy - Feeding indoor plants
Episode: #8 19/05/07
Presenter: Judy Horton
Judy is often asked what to feed indoor plants it can be tricky sometimes because naturally they do need to be fed. Because they are growing relatively slowly they need much less fertiliser then plants that are growing outside.
It is best to choose a gentle plant food that you can apply in a liquid form. This means you will be able to feed the plant at the same time as you water. Yates Dynamic Lifter Fish Emulsion is good because it has an organic base, or you can use something like the Yates Thrive houseplant food. For flowering plants Judy recommends picking something that says it is suitable for African violets, like the Yates Thrive Soluble flower and fruit. The important rule is that the slower the plant grows the less food it will need, which usually means it will need hardly any fertilising at all during winter.
If the leaves of indoor plants are clogged up with dust and grime, it is impossible for the plants to function properly. Wipe shiny leaves with a damp cloth that is been sprayed with a little bit of Yates PestOil. Plants with hairy leaves can be given the ‘brush off’.
As well as cutting down on their feeding, you will find that houseplants need less water in winter. One last tip, keep them well away from heaters because they hate dry air.
