Day 7 - United Nations Memorial Cemetery
Day 7 - June 2007
United Nations Memorial Cemetery
This sacred site has been the cemetery for the UN war braves fallen in the Korean War. An agreement was concluded in 1959 between the United Nations and the Republic of Korea to establish the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea to pay tribute to all those who died fighting for peace and freedom. This is the unique Cemetery in the world designated by the United Nations itself.
The Cemetery consists of largely three areas, symbolic, grave and grass areas. The symbolic area occupies the plateau with flags masts of participating nations of the UN Forces. It honours the precious sacrifice and symbolizes concerted efforts of 22 nations including Korea under the UN flag during the War.
Since its creation, various facilities and monuments have been erected. The two Turkish Memorials and the Greek Memorial stand in the symbolic area. The Commonwealth Memorial Monument commemorates the 386 missing braves of the Commonwealth Forces. The Australian Monument and the Canadian Memorial Statue are found in the grave area. The UN Forces Memorial erected by Korea in order to enshrine all 37,897 UN troops fallen in the Korean War pays tribute to them in the green area. These Monuments are all dedicated by their countries respectively.
The Main Gate dedicated by Busan citizens in 1966, and the Memorial Service Hall built in 1964 were both designed by a famous Korean architect, Kim Chung-up. They are significant additions to the historic characteristics of the UNMCK. Last interior renovation of the Memorabilia Hall and the Memorial Service Hall was effected in 2003.
During the period of 1951-1954, remains of approximately 11,000 fallen of the UN Forces were buried here at the UNMCK. Thereafter, most were removed to their home countries. The UNMCK is the permanent home of 2,300 war heroes of the following nations.
