Day 6 - Tumili Tombs
Day 6 - June 2007
Tumili Tombs
Gyeongju is a city in Korea that is steeped in history, in fact with such a large number of National Treasures declared within its borders, it is considered by the locals as a museum without walls.
One of the first things you notice here is the large mounds that sit high above the fence line of residential areas. These are tombs of the Silla Dynasty.
Neville visits Cheonmachong, the tomb of the Heavenly Horse which is believed to be the tomb of king Shilla. It is a wooden chamber tomb that measures 12.7 meters high and 157 meters in circumference. It is believed to date from the 5th or 6th century.
The tomb was built by placing a wooden coffin and a wooden chest for funerary objects on the flat floor and building a wooden chamber over them. Boulders were piled on top of the chamber and an earthen mound was built over the pile. Some 11,500 artifacts were retrived when the tomb was excavated. They include a gold crown and a pair of birch bark saddle flaps which were painted with a flying horse, thus giving the tomb its present name, Cheonmachong.
There are many other tomb sites around the city and a walk through the surrounding gardens is not only beautiful but also peaceful. Definitely worth a look.
