Day 4 - Mount Odae ? Woljeongsa Temple
Day 4- June 2007
Mount Odae ? Woljeongsa Temple
Mount Odae is found within Odaesan National Park was designated as a national park in 1975.
Featuring the 1563m high Birobong Peak, Odaesan spreads southwest with Mt. Sodaesan, Horyeong Peak and Mt. Sogyebangsan. The east side is connected with Sangwang peak and Duro Peak, which are over 1,000m high.
The representative temple of Odaesan, Woljeongsa Temple, was named after the fact that the full moon that rises above is particularly bright.Woljongsa is one of the main temples of the Jogye Order and was built by Ven. Chajang during the period of Shilla Queen Sondok. Upon arrival at Woljongsa, you can see the beautiful main pagoda, an 8-sided granite monument standing 15.2 meters high with nine levels that was built during the Koryo Dynasty(918-1392 C.E.). Also there is the Jeokmyeolbogung where Buddha's bone relics are said to be preserved. Fortunately for Korea and the Buddhist world, this pagoda has survived many fires and today is preserved as a Korean national treasure.
In front of the pagoda seats a Bodhisattva stone statue. Its appearance is that of a Bodhisattva kneeling down in a position of offering. The facial expression is quite special, with a smile and a look of cheerfulness. It is said that this statue itself brings many visitors to the Temple.
If you are interested to visit this temple avoid Wednesdays as it is the day when the monks visit other temples to give offerings. Seongbo Museum and a gift shop can be found on site which is also closed on Wednesdays.
