Replants.com
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Episode: #15 28/07/07
Grass Trees are only found in Australia and it is neither a grass nor a tree, in fact it is related to a lily and it is one of the slowest growing plants on earth, growing at the great pace of about 1cm per year. Grass Trees grow in bushland on the coastal plain and unfortunately with urban sprawl these iconic plants were being bulldozed up until now and you can become involved.
Replants.com is a company which salvage grass trees, zamias and other native plants for replanting in commercial and domestic applications, under license from bushland developments.
Sue visits the area of Yangebup, an area that is currently being cleared to make way for houses. You can come down here and pick out your very own grass tree for your garden, prices start at $50, and as a general guide a 1m high grass tree will cost $150
When you roll up to the site, you will have to sign in, as these sites are generally working construction sites and entry is conditional on the signing of a public liability waiver. You can then have the time of your life walking around deciding which grass tree is for you. Replants.com will then dig them out with an excavator and load them into the trailer. Sue recommends a trailer as it makes life much easier for everyone.
Grass trees of all shapes and sizes can be used to great effect in a wide variety of garden styles. The sculptural look of grass trees compliment modern architecture and provide the perfect design foundation when creating a water wise native garden.
Remember they are slow growing, so select one that is the perfect size now for the size garden you have, and if you are not sure, bring a photo down with you or a plan and the staff will help you out.
When you are wandering around the bush, and your practical side is telling you to get a small one, but your emotional side takes over and you fall in love with a large one, that just has go in your garden Replants.com will organise delivery for you, or delivery and installation at an additional charge, because these plants are deceiving, they might not look it, but they are heavy!
Each plant is supplied with a set of comprehensive planting instructions as is a conditional 24 month warranty. Replants.com can also supply a grass tree transplant formula they have developed to optimise transplant success.
