Winter spray for deciduous plants

Presenter: Judy Horton
Episode: #15 28/07/07

Winter is the ideal season to give deciduous trees (they are the ones that lose their leaves in winter) a clean up spray. If you want to keep your trees in good health, do not waste the opportunity to get in now while they are still in their bare winter state.

Here are some of the things you can do:

First, if there has been any sign of scale, aphids or other problems, insects over the past year, these pests could still be hiding in cracks in the bark, so spray trunks and branches with a generous coating of Yates White Oil Insecticide. This used to be called winter oil, which reminded us to use it at this time of year.

If fungal diseases like leaf curl were a problem last year, wait a few weeks and apply Yates Fungus Fighter Copper Fungicide just as the new bud tips are starting to emerge. Fungus Fighter is a new generation form of copper fungicide that mixes easily with water and doesn’t block spray nozzles. This makes it much easier to get good coverage all over the plant material.

Next, at the beginning of spring, give the plants a feed with a good quality fertiliser.

For Judy’s final tip: don’t worry about any lichen on the branches of your deciduous trees. It won’t cause any harm and when you take a close look you can see how truly beautiful it is.
