As clothes, music and hair go through trends cycles so do gardens however garden trends are tend to be influenced by the environment, drought and also lifestyle demands, less time for maintenance combined with a passion for outdoor living.

One group of plants that have become very popular are those with the strappy leaves getting a big tick of approval in all the relevant boxes such as architectural form, foliage colour and contrast, versatility and hardness and they are really easy to grow.

Leading the way in breeding these sensational plants is Ozbreed. Their talents don’t lie just with natives but extend past our shores to include exotics such as phormiums or better knows and New Zealand Flax. Two absolute rippers include Sweet Mist and Flamin.

Sweet Mist Flax (Phormium tenax ‘Sweet Mist’) is compact and very dense growing to about 400mm tall. It is a baby compared to some of the bigger flaxes which makes it ideal for small gardens or pots.

Flamin (Phormium tenax ‘Flamin’) gets slightly bigger than Sweet Mist. It grows to about 600-700mm tall, still compact with fine leaves and is tougher than most phormiums especially variegated types and is also great for pots.

They both have reddish bronze foliage that can be grown in full sun or shade, tolerate heavy frost and moderately dry conditions. They can handle pretty much any soil but need good drainage in the humid areas.
