Grey Water Irrigation
Presenter:Neville Passmore
Episode: #15 28/07/07
Neville’s garden is really beginning to come along, and one aspect that he is particularly proud about is that he is only using recycled grey water from the house to supply the entire needs of all the plants out front.
With the planting only half finished it is an ideal time to see how it all works. The ironic thing is that the most colourful item of the garden is about to be buried.
The waste water from the shower and laundry is treated by settling and then it gets pumped through the ingenious K-Valve into one of 6 irrigation lines which supply specific areas of the garden.
This water is delivered to the plants via this purple drip line hose. Now this pipe is not just a hose with holes the inbuilt emitters inside the pipe are all high science.
A double venturi system creates turbulence which prevents a build up of grit and rubbish which of course would have the potential to clog the emitters. So this pipe is a self cleaning set up.
You can install such a system yourself however Neville suggests engaging a professional to advise you on some things, for example on the length of drip line hose you can feed off on main line as well as help to get planning approval though your council
Also you need to place a pressure operated cleaner valve at the end of the line. This helps remove grit and rubbish from the drip lines at the beginning of each cycle.
A grey water reuse system like this is good value as it turns a waste resource into a garden saving water supply. This supply is not subject to water restrictions and can be applied as needed to empty the tanks.
One tip, during the wet season, winter in southern states, it is a good idea to divert the grey water to sewerage rather than over-water your garden.
