What to Do - Dawson’s Garden World - Joondalup

Presenter: Sue McDougall
Episode: #16 04/08/07

One of the most popular benefits of the Garden Gurus Garden club is getting your gardening questions answered by one of the Gurus. And you can imagine how many questions get answered every week, so today members can ask their questions in person at Dawson’s Joondalup.

One lady bought in a branch off her Peach tree with a question on what to do about her yearly appearance of curly leaves, this problem is actually called peach leaf curl; controlled by Peach leaf curl spray, spray just before or as the buds are just starting to swell and show the colour as it kills all the spores under neath the bud scale.

Another bought in a piece of her plum tree enquiring on the green growth on her branches, Lichen. Copper base spray can be sprayed on the Lichen if you don’t like the look of it, and it should clear up, although Lichen can cover the whole tree and it won’t hurt it.

A little tip when growing citrus is to leave them on the tree for a few weeks longer if they are sour. Do the taste test, if tart leave on for another week. This allows the sugars develop and there is nothing like the flavour of home grown fruit.

Fresh Mandarins plucked straight from the tree are perfect for kids’ lunch boxes and are packed full of nutrients and the good news is it is the perfect time to plant fruit trees now. Get them in the ground while the soil is damp and Dawson’s Garden World has one of the best choices of variety around.

Imagine never having to buy a lemon again or having fresh passion-fruit for the pavlova, vine ripened or roasted pears with natural yoghurt to top off the dinner party.

You don’t need a large pack yard to grow fruit trees, dwarf peaches and nectarines are perfect for growing in large pots they only grow to 1m high and fruit prolifically and are easy to grow.

The team at Dawson’s can help you with your edible garden, and if you select your varieties right you can have fresh produce all year round.
