Top Ten Dahlias

Presenter: Melissa King
Dahlia’s are absolute show-offs! They are like the fruit salad of the flower world with watermelon pink, peaches and cream, passionfruit and berry coloured flowers and the bees love them as much as we do, so here is Melissa’s top 10.

Dahlia ‘Agean Sky’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Agean Sky’) is a real winner with unusual magenta white flowers. It has a pretty collarette blooms, named for the frilly collar around the flower and is one of the world’s first fragrant dahlias.

Among the sunny yellow varieties ‘Ken’s Gold’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Ken’s Gold’) takes centre stage with rich golden blooms that don’t fade with the heat.

‘First Prize’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘First Prize’) deserves its award winning name with decorative tennis ball size blooms that are a delicious blend of magenta and pale yellow.
‘Tioga Autumn’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Tioga Autumn’) is equally captivating with its bicolour pink and yellow flowers. It has unusual frilly blooms with split petals that last well into autumn.

‘Phil Tulk’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Phil Tulk’) is admired for its deep red blooms that don’t fade in the sun and dark coloured stems.

Among the dark reds, ‘Jessy G’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Jessy G’) makes a real statement, with deeply coloured ball like flowers that are very deeply coloured and sit high on tall stems which make them perfect for the vase.

You will also love the sumptuous deep red blooms on ‘Black Beauty’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Black Beauty’). It is a fascinating flower, with pointy, curled petals.
For something softer, try ‘Figurine’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Figurine’) with its waterlily like flowers in a romantic soft shell pink.

‘Tartan’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Tartan’) is an old fashioned variety which dates back to the early to mid 1900’s, but is just as impressive today with bicolour white and maroon blooms, and gets up to the size of a small tea plate.

Also keep an eye out for dwarf dahlia varieties like ‘Isabella’ (Dahlia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Isabella’) with dark red blooms and attractive burgundy foliage. It stands at around a metre tall and doesn’t need staking.

Now here is Melissa’s tips for top looking blooms! Dahlias love to soak up the sun! They also like to be well fed so fertilise them regularly throughout the growing season, with a flower boosting formula like Yates Thrive Soluble Flower & Fruit Plant Food. Plant tubers around mid October for flower that last all summer long and if conditions are right, up until Mother’s Day. Water early in the morning and apply a good heavy mulch.
The real secret to lots of blooms is dead-heading or cutting blooms for the vase. The more you pick, the more flowers you get so you can fill your house with plenty of colour!
