Wollemi Pine
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Episode: The Garden Gurus ‘Favourite Gardens’
Apart from being one of the rarest trees on the planet this rather unusual looking conifer is one of the most fascinating survivors from the age of dinosaurs. It was discovered in single remnant stand in Australia at the Wollemi National Park in the Blue Mountains just 200 kilometres from Sydney at the bottom of a sandstone chasm.
Before this find in 1994 the only knowledge we had came from the fossil record which showed that this tree had lived right across the great southland called Gondwana and was related to Norfolk Island Pine, Bunya Bunya, Monkey Puzzle Tree and Kauri Pine.
Extinction is being fought by horticulturists who have developed techniques to propagate the tree and the fight can now be helped by the home gardener. You can now buy this remarkable living link with prehistory and grow it at home. To see ordering options please visit www.wollemipine.com/order.php
The Wollemi Pine is certainly pretty tough once established. You don?t get to hang around for 200 million years if you drop dead if miss one drink. The foliage is a flat shaped needle and the bark takes on an ornamental bubble appearance in maturity plus it can be multi-headed giving it a shrubby look.
In the home garden use the Wollemi Pine is a bushy feature tree, a living screen or consider the possibility as a potted specimen for the patio or indoor use in a well lit position. The Wollemi Pine can even be trimmed and cultivated as a bonsai.
To look after a Wollemi make sure the soil is organically enriched and well drained before planting. After this its simple, regular watering and feeding regime for all trees to get the root system established. After which the tree can pretty much look after itself.
If you are going to grow yours in a pot don?t ruin a lifetime investment with cheap potting mix. Go for the black tick?s logo of the Australian standards to give your tree a decent start in life.
