Lawns can be water guzzlers and contribute to excess nutrients polluting our waterways. You can avoid these problems by choosing low water use varieties, planting out the right amount of grass for your needs and being smart with fertilisers.

Lawns need feeding to maintain good health and growth to give that lush healthy appearance and it is important to know what to use, how often to apply it and how much to put on.

A major breakthrough in lawn fertilisers is the use of micro-pelleted slow release prills that slowly metre out nutrients over a number of months. Yates Lush Lawn Master has green pellets that offer three months of gradual feeding from one application.

The slow release means that the roots of the lawn can take up all of the nutrients in contrast to highly soluble fertilisers which tend to move quickly through the soil and if not taken up by the lawn roots it is wasted or what is worse contributes to nutrient pollution of underground water.

A second breakthrough is the addition of a wetting agent that helps to evenly wet the soil making the distribution of the nutrients getting into the root mass more effectively.

Apply about 30gm per square metre, about a third of a cupful. It is important to water this in and Neville recommends to this by hand so that you settle the fertiliser down into the grass so it won?t be picked up by the lawn mower.

Right now is a good time to apply the lawn food. It has been proven in commercial turf growing, to give you good colour immediately and well into winter. Regular feeding and frequent mowing discourage weed growth by favouring the growth of grass.
