A good patio area adds value to a property. A usable space outside means you can take advantage of a covered area all year round, protection from the hot sun in summer and there is somewhere dry for the whole family in winter. In most cases it also more than doubles the living area of a house.

And if the patio is covered with polycarbonate sheeting it is a good idea to take advantage of it and grow some plants that require a little more protection. One group of plants that you may not have thought of is succulents. They are normally associated with full sun positions, but there are some varieties that do perform better with a little protection from a roof covering. This is because the foliage does not stay wet during winter and spring; they also look brilliant multi planted in bowls of different sizes. All you need is some premium potting mix and a good selection of plants, colours, shapes and sizes.

Flapjacks Kalanchoe (kalanchoe thrysiflora ‘Flapjacks’) has large red fleshy leaves.

Red Devil Euphorbia (Euphorbia trigona “Red Devil”) is slow growing, making it perfect for pots.

Gasworthia is something a little different and has a gorgeous branching habit.

Ogre Ears (Crassula ovata “Ogre Ears”) has a naturally bushy habit and kids love the leaves.

Firesticks Euphorbia (Euphorbia tirucalli cv. ‘Firesticks’) keeps an unusual, yet brilliant colour all year round.
