Presenter: Sue McDougall
Episode: 20 (8 September 2007)
Sometimes having a gorgeous garden with a dog seems impossible. They do have a habit of ruining your favourite plant, by running through it or lying on top of it. Many gardeners are faced with the same dilemma and Sue thought that we would answer the frequently asked questions about pets in the garden at Better Pets and Gardens. These solutions will help to ensure a healthy gardens and happy pets.
Yellow patches on lawns.
Try Pet rocks, which go in the water bowl for the dog. They will neutralise the urine, eliminating the yellow patches.
Can you suggest some dog proof plants?
Strappy leaved plants such as cordylines, flax, dianellas, lomandras and liriopes are all good options. They will just spring back and not get crushed by the dog.
Is fertiliser harmful to my dog, she follows me around eating it?
Pure blood and bone is fine, the worst case scenario is that the dog will have a belly ache. When using lawn fertiliser try to use a controlled release fertiliser, where granules are small and get down to the soil surface. Control release fertilisers release their nutrients over a period of time and the lawn can draw on the nutrients when they are needed. Water it in once applied and it will not be as attractive to the dog.
Do chooks do damage to my garden when they scratch around?
Yes, especially in summer; as scratching exposes the plant roots. Also, the mulch is not really doing its job and protecting the roots, making the plants stress. Put some chook wire around the plant and then mulch, so if they try to scratch they can not get into mulch.
How do I stop my dog going onto my favourite plants?
You can use a product like “Get off my garden” it comes in a granular, liquid or gel form. This has a strong smell that repels the dog and cats.
The team at Better Pets and Gardens get these questions all the time. Pets and gardens go together and they want you to have the best garden at the same time have happy pets. Next time you have a problem call in and ask the friendly staff yourself.
