A common question on our online forum is “What is a great small flowering tree for my yard?” Magnolias are an excellent choice and they are in full flower all across NSW right now.

Magnolia x soulangeanas are part of a group of tough, long lived and absolutely stunning flowering trees that are perfectly suited to our harsh and dry climate. Many Magnolias, including the x soulangeanas, are deciduous and burst into flower at the start of spring just before the leaves start to appear, the results are truly breathtaking.

Magnolias in general make a great small flowering tree for the average back yard. Right now is the perfect time to head down to your local garden centre and have a look at the all the different flowering types, that way you will pick one that is perfect for your home. Do not forget to check the scent; some of them have a nice light fragrance.

They can tolerate a heavy clay soil and even prolonged dry periods but they are best planted out of strong wind otherwise you may loose its beautiful display. Magnolias are very hardy and require very little care once established. A good thick layer of mulch at the base in summer will help them to survive any dry conditions.

If you do not want a deciduous tree there is a number of evergreen Magnolias also available. Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ has become one of the most popular plants in Australia. ‘Little Gem’ has nice glossy green leaves with a brown undertone and a thick leathery texture. It does do not grow too tall, making it perfect for screening and hedging. The large dinner plate sized, white flowers make it a stunning addition to any garden.

Magnolias are elegant, drought hardy and small garden friendly; they are available in white flowering forms and pink flowering forms, they can grow to either small or large trees. Many will also grow well in pots. With such a range available it is possible to find a Magnolia perfect for any garden.
