What to Do: Outdoor Living and Garden Rooms

Presenter: Dean Boone
Episode: 21 (15 September 2007)

Dean Boone visited a wonderful garden which was all about garden rooms and outdoor living. Many gardeners would have heard of these concepts and the previewed garden was a great example of how the concepts can work.

Dean started in the front garden. Here the focus was drawing you in, towards the front door. The garden greets you and a sweep of lawn allows you to take in the view of a simple stone urn on a plinth. The garden is fairly understated, homely and welcoming. So the first garden room is just saying hello.

As you step out into the back yard, things suddenly get very exciting. A huge expanse of paving is where most of the outdoor entertaining is done and it’s the centre point of the garden, it looks out over the rest of the garden and everything is in proportion to the house.

The first view is onto the pool area, which is square to the house and extends the lines of the home out into the garden. This in-between terrace creates a garden room where the owners can sit and watch the kids for hours whilst they swim and play to their hearts content.

A small lawn area leads down a very dramatic walkway that leads past the pool area and into a woodland garden. This is the transition between the property and the surrounding bush. Every place in the garden has a different feel and these series of garden rooms beckon you to walk and see what’s just around the next corner.

A pathway through the woodland garden leads to another very special part of the garden. It is where a set of gates serve to define a smaller garden area and act as a frame to view a focal point urn.

The whole garden works itself in a giant circle, leading you around from one space to another and back out to the front garden past a small, quiet sitting area. The creation of garden rooms or spaces within a space in this garden has achieved wonderful flow and constant intrigue.
