Garden Design at the King Family Garden

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 23 (6th October 2007)

Welcome to week number four of our water-wise makeover. Last week the King family had a Greymate system installed so that they could safely use grey water from the washing machine on the garden. Now this week the backyard really starts to be transformed because our colour plan is ready to go and the big boy’s toys are ready to come in.

In week two, Vessel Samakovski, an expert from one of our water saver garden centres came in and chatted to Andy and Michelle to flesh out a concept for the water-wise garden. Now Mark Hill from the Garden Company has stepped in and turned the concept into a full scale design.

Interview Mark Hill: The Garden Company.
Michelle:
“The materials that you are going to use for the deck are they from recyclable materials?”
Mark
“All recycled hardwoods, yeah. So it’s all sustainable you’re not going ripping down any forests which is good”.

Mark pointing to the plan
“Wandering around the path here, across the mock creek bed, you’ve got your pond here and you’ll have some water plants in there. Soft grasses all around to give a nice balanced look with the pebbles and pebbles paths so that the water can soak it when it rains and you’re not getting all that run off. We’ve got a small lawn area for the kids and we’ll sink a water tank in below there to feed it.”
Michelle:
“Have we got small and large plants throughout the garden?”
Mark:
“We’ll be screening off all across here with the trees; we got you She Oaks, Saw Banksia and Agonis flexuosa ‘After Dark’. For a little bit of seasonal change we’ve got a deciduous planting here off the Sapium sabiferum, which is a Chinese Tallow, it has beautiful leaves in Autumn.”

The guys from the Garden Company started digging and digging to create a home for our water tank. The 15,000 litre water underground tank won’t impact on the look of the backyard and can capture rain to sustain the new water wise garden.
