Bulleen Art and Garden: Sustainable Gardens
Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 23 (6th October 2007)
Sustainable Gardening isn’t just a fleeting trend, it’s about gardening with concern for the environment and nurseries like Bulleen Art and Garden are showing that it’s a revolution that’s here to stay!
‘Baag’ as it is affectionately called, is at the cutting edge of environmentally responsible gardening practices; which means everything from saving water and energy in the garden to creating your own organic kitchen garden.
One of the best reasons to grow your own fruit and vegetables is to reconnect kids with where their food is coming from so they know that tomatoes don’t grow in the supermarket. When you grow it yourself you also know its fresh, you know how it’s been grown and you’re making environmental savings that you’ve probably never thought of.
The nursery industry is really starting to make some big steps in areas like growing practices and packaging to reduce waste and encourage environmentally responsible gardening.
One of the results is called the 'Circle of Life' initiative; their slogan is "Your Future, Your World, Your Environment".
The ‘Circle of Life’ imitative is a new line of Herbs and Vegetables that are grown with truly sustainable practices. They are sold in waste free compostable pots made from the ornamental grass miscanthus. They are grown in organic enriched soil and the plants are fed with a 'whole food' diet which adds beneficial microbes to the garden and aids establishment. They are produced by local growers, for more information visit the Bulleen Art and Garden website.
The lawn is as Aussie as a meat pie at the footy, but these days there are lots of alternatives to lawn that provide the same advantages without the high water use or maintenance. You can create a living floor with groundcovers like Myoporum or dry tolerant native grasses. Another great idea is to replace a lawn space with an indigenous plant meadow, with a mix of local grasses, perennials and lilies. Such a space will not only look good but will increase wildlife activity and require very little water.
Bulleen Art and Garden have got all the right ideas and advice for lawn solutions that are more environmentally realistic, practical and attractive throughout the year.
Bulleen Art and Garden is full of character and an ideal place to learn how to live and garden sustainably.
