Vegetables in a Cottage Garden
Presenter: Phil Dudman
Episode: 23 (6th October 2007)
You know, you don’t necessarily need a separate veggie patch if you want to have a go at growing your own vegetables. That’s what the traditional ‘cottage’ style garden was all about. Cottage gardens with roses, daisies and other flowers growing happily beside herbs, fruits and vegetables and they look great together.
The great thing about such a garden is that it highlights the ornamental appeal of vegetables. It’s not something we think of that often, but many vegetable plants, like Mini Cauliflower and Asian Greens, just look fantastic in amongst the flowers.
But one of the most interesting benefits of having a big mix of flowers around your veggie is that it attracts a wide range of beneficial insects. Beneficial insects are the good bugs that keep the bad bugs down to a manageable level. This is one way the old time cottage gardeners could garden so successfully without using chemicals
Now when you’re planting amongst your flowers you should always start with some good soil preparation. Dig in plenty of compost; add some blood and bone, some Dynamic Lifter and a good pinch of potash.
Phil planted at a selection of plants especially chosen from Pohlmans Gourmet Vegetable range they all look and taste amazing.
They have lovely red grape tomatoes which are a lovely bite size, great for salads and they’ll give you kilos of bright red, juicy sweet tomatoes. Cucumber Apple will also give you massive crops too with a nice round apple sized fruit. You can just let them trail or grow them up a trellis.
Now is a good time for planting melons and if you’re tight on space try Rockmelon Mini’s, you get lots of small single serve fruit with a big flavour.
There is also a great range of herbs. Basil loves the warmer months, as do Chillies. If you like your Chillies hot you can’t go past the ‘Flamin’ Hot Variety’.
Lettuces are also perfect for your cottage garden they give you loads of colours and leaf shapes to play with and they look great as borders or planted in patches en masse.
So you see, you don’t have to have a veggie patch. The new Pohlmans range of veggies look so good you can pop them in just about anywhere you’ve got a patch of sun. So get into it.
