Christmas Pageant Floral Arrangements

Presenter: Kim Syrus
Episode: 26 (3rd November 2007)

Many will remember the excitement as a kid sitting along King William Street waiting for the Christmas Pageant to start. Then, of course, as it rolled on by, looking out for the Big Man, Father Christmas waving from his enormous sleigh. This years Credit Union Christmas Pageant is celebrating its 75th anniversary and to mark the occasion, a number of floats are having a major floral makeover.

Stardust Castle is a magical place. It’s where all the floats live and are cared for, painted and preened throughout the year, ready for the big day. It’s not only the floats that are here, all the amazing costumes are carefully stored as well.

Some very well known floats that will be joining in with the 75th birthday celebrations are Nipper, Nimble and the Pageant Princess. They’ve been redecorated, painted a bright diamond white and will be covered in bouquets of brilliant blooms.

Blaire Ringwaldt is the Chief Floral Organiser responsible for creating the magnificent floral arrangements.

Kim
“What experience do you need to become a volunteer?”

Blaire
“Well we range from the very inexperienced, working with flowers, right up to those who have been working with flowers for maybe forty or fifty years. You don’t have to have experience to come and help.”

Kim
“What type of flowers do you choose to go into the arrangements?”

Blaire
“The flowers I choose I look for those with strong stems, those that have got a good focal flower that will show up from a distance and those with perfume.”

Kim
“What are some of your tips in keeping your cut flowers lasting longer?”

Blaire
“Soaking them well before you use them, always have them soaking in water for as long as you can and if you buy a bunch of flowers when you get home cut off the bottom centimetre or so and put them in a bucket of water.”

Kim
“How many flowers will you be using in the pageant arrangements?”

Blaire
“Each float will have about three thousand flowers.”

Kim
“Now the biggest question which I don’t know whether you can answer is; does Santa have a favourite flower?”

Blaire
“I’m sure he loves all plants but we were thinking about it and we think he probably likes the white liliums because they would remind him of home.”
