Fiskars Tools

Episode: # 27 01/12/07
Presenter: Melissa King

There is nothing worse than an axe with a head that slips. Fiskars Axe has got it all sorted with a handle that is moulded around the head so it is not going to go anywhere. The handle is made from a combination of fibreglass and nylon, which makes it super strong and super light. Most of the weight is in the head which makes it easy to swing, so you can do some wood splitting with less effort.

Do not throw away the packaging because it doubles as a storage unit so you can store it away safely. To keep the blade nice and sharp you will need a Fiskars Axe Sharpener. It has a ceramic wheel inside here that does all the work. All you have to do is simply move the blade back and forth. You even can use it to sharpen your kitchen knives too, but for that purpose use it in the one direction.

Secateurs
are a gardener’s best friend. They are a tool that you use all the time so make sure you look out for the Fiskars model with a roll handle. It uses a whole hand action, so it takes the pressure off your thumb, great for arthritis sufferers and perfect if you just want to make pruning easier. You can easily adjust the cutting width and how wide the handles open to make them to fit your hand. They also have gears for extra cutting power this will allow you to prune everything from roses to broom handle size stems.

A good pair of Snips are handy to have for the garden because they are perfect for cutting flowers or fresh herbs from the garden. Melissa keeps hers in the kitchen cupboard for dead-heading leaves on her indoor plants.

A pair of Hedge Shears is really handy even if you don’t have a formal hedge. They are great for giving shrubs like lavender a good old trim or shearing back a first flush of flowers. Again they are light weight and the geared mechanism makes cutting easier and more power means a better finish.

Gearing really comes into its own when you are working with a top pair of Loppers. They allow you to cut through a broom handle sized branch without a lot of grunt. The hook grabs and holds the branch to avoid slipping.

An Easy Reach Pruning Wand makes light work for those hard to reach places. It has an adjustable head, which makes it easy to get into the middle of a tree and two action points, a slide down handle and a pull down cord if you need extra height. You can also attach a saw head or fruit picker for other fiddly jobs.
