Christmas Ideas for Green and Black Thumbs

Episode: # 28 08/12/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman

Gardeners have got to be one of the easiest people to give presents to. Just give them something green and you can be pretty sure it will make them happy. Now if you’re stuck for gift ideas this Christmas, there are a few fool proof plants that even your black thumb friends will have success with.

The first one is a fun little plant idea called ‘Life on the Rocks’. You can see the plants have been set onto a piece of Volcanic Rock, each one has its own unique personality, resembling a bit like a bonsai. They are much easier to look after than your average bonsai because the plants they have chosen are quite hardy. You’ve got the bird’s nest fern, which looks great and the mini umbrella tree as well.

They are presented nicely in a rectangular ceramic dish with a finish of pebbles, perfect for display indoors or on a shady balcony, a great looking gift ready to go.

Another nice little package is the Zanzibar Gem® (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) and you can find them as a ready gift displayed in tall and short ceramic pots as well as in these new bamboo style planters.

The Zanzibar Gem is an indoor plant that thrives on neglect. It only needs water once a month at the most. So you could get it now, put it under the Christmas tree and forget about it. On Christmas day, it’ll look as good as the day you bought it.

What about this for an idea? The Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) which you have possibly seen before. It is actually a type of Dracaena that has been trained into weird and wonderful shapes that can be displayed in all sorts of ways. Plant a few in a nice pot if you like or even into a simple vase of water. That is all they will need to grow, just a bit of fresh water and they don’t need a great deal of light either, perfect for indoors. They also come in little vials of water to keep them fresh. You could just simply tie a bow onto them and they can make a great little stocking filler.

Talking of stocking fillers don’t forget to grab a copy of the Garden Guru Newspaper. It is a great read and the fresh new summer issue is out now. You can get them at Mitre 10 stores and good garden centres.

Plants available at:
Big W (Victoria & Queensland), Bunnings (New South Wales & Queensland) and all good retailers.
