Your Garden Questions Answered

Episode: # 28 08/12/07
Presenter: Nigel Ruck

Why do we always leave our Christmas shopping to the last minute? Many of us (including our very own Nigel Ruck) tend to do it ever year.

Plants can make perfect gifts but there is a few things to remember before you hand over your hard earned money. You don’t want to create work for someone so choose something that is low maintenance.

Of course not everyone has a garden, which makes indoor plants a perfect gift. One of the best is the Peacock Plant which is easy to care for and has beautiful flowers, what more could you want?

With plants as gifts it is a good idea to go all out, this may include potting them up. A Yates self watering pot is perfect because they have a water well and they boast the latest technology for root training which prevent root rot. Also use a good potting mix like the Rolls Royce of potting mixes the Yates GroPlus Professional Potting Mix. It has water storing crystals, a controlled release fertiliser and a bio stimulant which accelerates growth.

When you put your potting mix in build it up around the edges and then create a well in the middle. To ensure the right depth, keep your plant in the pot and only take it out once you are happy with the depth. Take the plant out of the pot very carefully so not to disturb the plants roots. Carefully place the plant in the pot and back fill carefully.

Water in the plant using Yates plant food with fish emulsion, the plants will just love you for it. As an added little extra for the whole gift back, grab some follow fertiliser like Thrive Soluble Plant Food.

An indoor plant potted up into a great pot can be the perfect gift and it is not hard to do.
