Christmas Ready Gardens

Episode: # 29 15/12/07
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Are you under the pump to get your garden looking fabulous for the relatives for Christmas? It’s only nine days away so there is no time to waste. While creating a fantastic garden may be out of the question in a short period of time, Sue had a few practical tips to have your own garden looking fabulous.
First take a look around your garden and start with a list but be realistic and ask yourself, what can you achieve in such a short time?
For maximum impact add some instant colour to the garden, drag any empty pots from out of the garden shed and fill them up with colour. Apply a wetting agent around the whole garden and don’t forget to water it in well. You will probably be very busy for the next few weeks and the wetting agent will make good use of any water being applied.

To cover any bare soil areas or weedy garden beds a couple of trailer loads of mulch are the go. It does fantastic things to your soil and the health of your plants. It also covers a multitude of sins so a quick trip to the landscape supply company should be a priority.
Mulch is basically divided into two categories; organics and non-organics such as stones, gravels and pebbles. The key to good mulch for the garden is to ensure there is a mixture of large particles and small ones in the blend. This ensures the water soaks into the soil and isn’t reabsorbed by the mulch. A ten centimetre thick layer is recommended.

If doing up your outdoor entertaining area is high on the list you might like to consider the new Travertine pavers from Atlas paving. The large format size means they are perfect for the do it yourselfer and the great feature is that they have a built in spacer which makes laying them dead easy. The secret to getting the pavers to look so natural is in the mould, they have been created by taking the best quality Spanish Travertine and using it as a template for the mould. They are perfect for the outdoor or alfresco area. Atlas has plenty in stock and you can create a wow factor both easily and cheaply. They are about a third of the price a real Spanish Travertine.
Once all the hard work is done there will be time to sit back, relax and enjoy your garden.
