Phil tours the Children’s Trail

Episode: # 29 15/12/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman

It’s no secret that the world that our kids know (dominated by computer games and the like) is very different to the one that many of us grew up in. Now that’s OK because that’s their world, but we must not forget the importance of giving our kids an appreciation of the natural world. A great way to start is by taking kids to public gardens, and the latest development at the Brisbane Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens could be just the thing to help plant that seed.

The latest development is called the Children’s Trail and it is a garden full of natural wonders designed to capture the imagination of children of all ages.

Margot Mac Manus is the Visitor Services Coordinator at Mt Coot-tha and she agreed to show Phil Dudman around.

Margot: “This is the beginning of our trail. We are really happy with this piece. We are hoping that it is going to become an iconic place for children to be photographed when they come to the gardens. When we come across the leaves painted on the trail it indication that there is some point of interest for kids.”

Phil: “Margot the Floss Silk Tree is one tree I reckon kids will never forget.”

Margot: “They love this tree. You can see because they have been touching it so much. We call this tree the Tarzan tree because of the noise you would make if you climbed up and feel down.”

Phil: “Margot I have just spotted something that I find quite frightening.”

Margot: “This is our king of the water dragons, you can see that he surrounded by his followers.”

Phil: “They are coming in from everywhere aren’t they?. They are trying to be just like him.”

Margot: “Quite often you will find one sitting on his back aswell.”

Phil: “So what’s been the reaction from children so far?”

Margot: “The children have been really intrigued by it. They love it. So often there are shots of children in the garden and they have got this absolutely intrigued, engrossed look on their face.”

Public gardens are great places to bring kids. So how about this weekend? Drag them away from the computer for just a few hours it’ll be worth it. When you’re in Brisbane make sure you pop out and see the Children’s Trail.
