The Design of a Modern garden Centre

Episode: # 29 15/12/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman

Botanix Lifestyle Garden Centre at Wellington Point is a great example of what the modern day garden centre is all about. They have a huge selection of quality plants and beautiful display areas to help inspire you. There’s also a huge outdoor furniture area, an amazing gift shop with some terrific ideas, a fabulous café (open 7 days) and they even have an art gallery.

It’s this blend of services and attractions that have seen Botanix take out some of Queensland’s most prestigious honours including this year’s Best Large Garden Centre award. But more than that, the team takes great pride in their recent accreditation under the Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia.

So what does that mean? Well, for the customer, it means you’re dealing with a business that operates in accordance with a set of national ‘best practice’ guidelines. The scheme aims to encourage excellence in retailing with a strong emphasis on identifying and meeting customer needs.

As you would expect safe environmental practices are important too. It may not be obvious as you walk around a garden centre like Botanix but there’s been a lot of thought put into the place to ensure it’s an environmentally sustainable business

Kate Fitzgerald is the senior horticulturist at Botanix and a passionate environmentalist and Phil asked Kate to describe the design of the centre in more detail.

Kate: “Botanix is a purpose built facility and right from the start, we have been able to take many environmental initiatives during construction. These massive roof areas have been designed to harvest rainwater and that’s collected and stored is our 300,000L rainwater tank facility. Any overflow is stored in our large dam. This is our water supply for the nursery and our gardens which is fed through an automated irrigation system.”

Phil: “What happens to the runoff?”

Kate: “Any run off from the system is collected via the drainage system and filtered before being recycled. All of our plants are watered at night when evaporation is low and our extensive gardens are also watered by the recycled water.”

Phil: “It’s an efficient system. What about these beautiful pavilions, tell us about their design?”

Kate: “None of our pavilions are air-conditioned but they’ve been designed to take advantage of cross ventilation. Natural lighting is used to its best advantage too.”

So there is a bit of an insight into what’s behind the design of a modern garden centre such as Botanix. So why don’t you come and see this award winning center for yourself. You’ll find Botanix on Nelson Road at Wellington Point.
