Christmas Colour

Episode: # 29 15/12/07
Presenter: Melissa King

More than a hundred years ago Charles Darwin published his famous Theory of Evolution, but one thing he didn’t anticipate was the way garden centres in the last few years have evolved. The days when nurseries sold just plants have well and truly gone. They are now well and truly a social hub.

They’re a place to meet friends, enjoy a gourmet meal, shop for gifts and home wares and of course get great gardening advice and products. There is no better example than Acorn Nursery in Surrey Hills.

When you see poinsettias appear in nurseries, you know the big fat jolly man with a white beard is on his way. The decorative bracts are blazing red and wonderfully festive on the Christmas table. Cream topped varieties are just as cheery and look like they are laden with snow. Position them in a bright filtered light spot indoors, then after the festive season’s over you can plant them straight into the garden or in pots on the patio.

The virginal white Lilium longiflorum has become a much loved symbol of Christmas, with big white trumpet flowers and a sweet fragrance. Bring them indoors on the big day then plant them outdoors in a sunny or partly shaded position for years of enjoyment.

Forget jocks, socks and soap on a rope definitely won’t cut it this Christmas. So how about something to brighten patio for months of summer entertaining.

Fuchsias are just superb and are available with combinations of peaches and cream and berries and cream. They have wonderfully feminine flowers and their cascading form is perfect for hanging displays. Fuchsias teamed with brilliant blue lobelia can create a breathtaking combination.

Petunias are the philanthropists of the garden; they just keep giving and giving. Their brilliant colours bring life to outdoor areas throughout the warmer months and they’re tough in the heat and dry.

And why buy dad a bottle of old spice, when gardenias look and smell better. Gardenia florida is up there with the best, smothered in white flowers that fill the garden with perfume. It enjoys a well drained soil and a warm protected spot. Keep up the feeding for months of colour.
