Unveiling the King Family Garden Part 1

Episode: # 30 22/12/07
Presenter: Melissa King

It’s been an incredible journey to transform the King families barren windswept backyard into a water wise oasis using everything we know about water smart gardening. And now the end is nearly in sight.

On our shopping trip to the water saver garden centres we gathered a whole palette of tough beautiful plants, so during the week the crew from the Garden Company got stuck into some serious planting.

At the start of the series we set out to prove to you that with a great selection of plants and a creative approach to design a water-wise garden can be simply stunning. Now we just have to add the final touches.

We called on the award-winning Lump Sculpture Studio who specialise in contemporary light and water features, screens and sculptures to create a stunning piece. The garden has a natural rustic feel to it and free flowing lines, so we opted for a Sphere made from Rusted steel to compliment the look of the garden. It’s a beautiful contrast to mounds of Acacia ‘Mini Cog’ with cascading lime green foliage.

When you step out onto the patio the first thing you see is the stone wall area. The feature in this area is a gorgeous old recycled pier stump, which fits in with the rustic style of the garden. Sitting on top is the hottest thing in garden art a cast iron wok or bowl which we picked up from Bayside Flower and Garden, a boutique nursery renowned for their artistic flair. Together they make the perfect centrepiece.

The final step was to deck out the entertaining area so we called on our friends at the Greenery to find us the perfect outdoor setting. If you’re looking for outdoor furniture or any of the latest garden accessories to spruce up your outdoor Living areas, The Greenery in Heidelberg should be top of your list for inspiration.

The outdoor furniture blends with the natural style of the garden, but still has modern flair. It looks like Ratten or wicker, but it’s actually plastic, so you can easily wipe it down and it won’t perish outside. We used the cappuccino coloured setting but the Greenery also have it in ivory and charcoal. To brighten it up we added some colourful cushions.

Lots of kids, means lots of mouths to feed, so we needed the ultimate BBQ and Barbeques Direct have come to the party literally with a stainless steel beauty that fits with the tone of the garden.
