Unveiling The King Family Garden Part 2
Episode: # 30 22/12/07
Presenter: Melissa King
This week was the final episode in our Water wise Makeover on the King Families backyard. There was just a couple of little things that needed to be done before we could reveal the finished garden.
Now that the plants are in it’s time to mulch which is a powerful weapon in the fight to conserve water in the garden. So we called on the guys at Bio Gro again to bring us in a big load.
We opted for a fine composted bark for a number of reasons. First it is nice dark coloured mulch, so aesthetically it will blend well with the natural style of the garden. The pieces are small, so as well as conserving moisture and suppressing weeds - it will enrich and feed the soil as it breaks down.
The last step for the garden was to deck the paths out with granitic sand from Fulton’s Garden Supplies in Hawthorn East. Granitic sand forms a natural looking path way that will last for a long time and blends beautifully with the surrounding garden.
Our Waterwise Makeover is complete and the results are just amazing. The good news is that everything we’ve done along the way can easily be done in your garden.
The garden evolved beautifully over time so let’s recap.
We started with a grand plan for our beautiful water wise garden. First, in went our grey mate to make use of waste water from the washing machine, then we dug a giant hole in the backyard for our 15,000litre underground water tank. A week later water efficient drip irrigation and lighting were installed. Then the structure of the garden came to life with rock walls, screens and retaining walls.
We got stuck into the soil preparation by adding plenty of compost, wetting agent and water storing crystals. Finally was, the icing on the cake, a collection of the best water-smart plants on the market.
Thanks to the hard-working team at the Garden Company the finished product is just perfect, waterwise and show stopping.
Well you’ve seen all the work that’s gone into this amazing transformation, but do you remember what it looked like?
An ugly service area is now an edible paradise. Water hungry grass became a more compact waterwise lawn and a palette of greenery. Daggy old retaining walls are now natural stone walls and boring, thirsty plants have been replaced with a paradise of dry tolerant beauties.
The garden has been a great experience, and thanks goes to all the boys at the Garden Company, all of the Watersaver Garden Centres and suppliers Victoria wide who lent us a hand. The results speak for themselves so it’s definitely a reason to celebrate. Just remember it’s our water, our future.
