Story Title: Planting out a veggie patch

Now that Neville has helped the residents of Brentwood Retirement Village Kincumber to build an edible garden its time to start the planting!! In an edible garden you can use everything from vegetables to herbs to edible flowers.

Planting

  • Add fertiliser to the soil and rake lightly then water in well.
  • Make a furrow for the seeds and plants.
  • Cover the seeds with a light covering of soil to the depth recommended on the seed package.
  • Planted or sown rows should run north/south to ensure all plants receive maximum sunlight and minimal shading.
  • At least 50cm between rows to allow for a walkway and use of wheelbarrow.
  • Keep taller plants on the south side of any bed to avoid shading other vegetables.

After Care

  • Check the soil regularly and keep moist.
  • A good deep water is preferable to short shallow watering.
  • Use regular doses of organic or artificial fertilisers.
  • Include animal manures or blood and bone.
  • Remove weeds by hand or with a garden hoe.
  • Use insecticides and pesticides to get rid of pests.
  • Inspect plants regularly for any little leaf chewing insects or disease symptoms and dispose of any diseased crops.
  • Use companion plants to protect your plants from pests and disease.
  • When preparing new beds rotate crops.
