Featured Product- Sustainable House Day
As part of the 7th annual Sustainable House Day, homes across the country will open so others can learn and experience the benefits of all aspects of sustainable living. And what’s more, these houses appear normal on the outside…so it’s only when stepping inside that the learning begins!
Over the years Sustainable House Day has been showing people the benefits of energy efficiency in their homes, and we have seen a dramatic increase in interest. People now realise they need to reduce their energy, water and waste needs in their home…but are confused on where to start.
That’s where Sustainable House Day can help. There is nothing better than talking to people who have already done it. You can learn the good, and the bad, from the home owner’s personal experience and talk to architects, builders and designers. And once you have experienced living in a home that is cool in summer, without air-conditioning, and warm in winter with little or no heating, it’s hard not to get excited.
There will be a variety of sustainable living tips on display at the houses open this year. The aim is motivate, and provide information so people can go home and start implementing some of the fundamentals straight away.
You can find an open house in your neighbourhood by going to House Locations on the Sustainable House website.
Real Houses for Real People: Be Inspired!
See some of Australia's most beautiful homes when they open to visitors on Sustainable House Day. All homes feature passive solar design and some also have active solar features, sustainable building products, water saving and recycling technologies, and so much more...
Building? Buying? Renovating?
Sustainable House Day is a must for anyone about to embark on a home improvement project. You'll meet with householders and expert designers, experience passive solar design and sustainable housing in action and take home ideas and inspiration to save money and save the environment.
What's Passive Solar Design?
Siting a house to take advantage of the sun and the breeze; choosing materials that help save energy; constructing a house to keep cool in summer and warm in winter - all these add up to passive solar design. Solar homes use the natural energy of the sun and the wind for heating and cooling; as well as simple solutions like insulation and shading. Because they use less energy and respond to the natural environment, passive solar houses are cheaper to run, more comfortable to live in and better for the environment.
Who runs the event?
Sustainable House Day is organised by the Australia New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZSES). ANZSES is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the environmentally sustainable use of energy. The event is made possible by volunteers who open their homes and by the support of community, ethical corporate and government sponsors. All our sponsors promote products or ideas that lead to more sustainable buildings and lifestyles.
