Growing Agaves
Episode: Four
Date: 9th May (10th in WA)
Story: Growing Agaves
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Trevor shows you how to grow one of the most popular landscape plants in your own garden, the Agave. It requires very little watering and will add value to your home.
Featured Plant: Foxtail Agave, Agave attenuata
- The Foxtail Agave originated from Mexico.
- They are known as the unarmed Agave, as they don?t have any spines on their stems.
- They produce a stunning flower spike, which is two meters in height. Whilst this flower looks amazing, it does signal the end of their life.
- The plant produces masses of seeds. Once the flower has finished, each seed turns into a tiny plant, and the entire cycle starts again.
- Agave is a tough plant, able to grow without any supplementary watering in summer. They do grow faster however, if watered twice a week.
- Many mature plants have suckers, or plantlets around their base. These can be removed simply by being cut or broken off.
- Leave these to dry out for a week before popping them into some good potting mix and keeping them moist. Ensure that they aren?t in a position where they will be moved by wind, so that the developed roots can be established properly.
- Large Agaves can cost $50-100 at the nursery, so it is highly economical to take the time and effort with the plantlets that grow from your mature plants.
