Foliage makes a great addition to any garden, so this week Neville takes a look at a new range of plants developed by Ozbreed known as ?Foliage First?.
Foliage plants make designing a new garden very easy, as they come in a variety of colour as well as make perfect borders and fillers. Ozbreed?s ?Foliage First? plants perform all year round, survive on little water, maintenance and irrigation.
Featured Plant: Flamin? Flax, Phormiim tenax
- The Flamin? Flax has vibrant red, orange and bronze foliage.
- It is more tough and vivid than most other forms of this species.
- It is a semi-compact Phormium.
- The Flamin? Flax grows well in full sun, as well as in shaded positions.
- Is a highly tolerable plant, surviving in both heavy frost and moderately dry conditions.
- Suitable for most soil types.
Featured Plant: Sweet Mist, Phormium tenax
- This plant works fantastically as a border or filler in any garden.
- Like the Flamin? Flax, Sweet Mist also has bold bronze coloured foliage.
- It is an ultra-compact plant.
- Due to its size, Sweet Mist isn?t as tolerant to humidity as larger Phormiums are, however, it will thrive in temperate areas such as VIC, SA, WA, TAS, ACT and the Southern Coast of NSW.
- Sweet Mist Flax grows to a height of approx 35-40cm.
- Grows well in full sun to shaded areas.
Featured Plant: Utopia, Dianella Prunina
- Has stunningly contrasted foliage of purple and green.
- The Utopia is very easy to maintain.
- It grows to around 50cm in both height and width, with its flower stems reaching over one meter in height.
- The Utopia is a very tough and durable plant, able to tolerate a wide variety of weather conditions, from frost to drought.
- This plant is suitable for all states up to South East QLD, and as far north as the Sunshine Coast.
- Able to grow in full sun to part shade.
Featured Plant: Baby Bliss, Dianella revoluta
- The Dianella Baby Bliss is a brand new plant.
- It produces beautiful blue flowers in spring-time.
- The Baby Bliss is a very tough and durable plant.
- Grows to a height and width of 25cm.
- Ideal for garden borders or ground cover.
- Is suited to a wide selection of soil types.
Featured Plant: Emerald Arch, Dianella tasmanica
- The Emerald Arch has arching leaves with delicate blue-yellow flowers.
- This is a tropical looking plant that works well in colder regions.
- It grows to 45cm by 45cm.
- This plant is hardy and versatile, suitable for heavy shade in all states and full sun in all states except Queensland.
- When planting, ensure that the Emerald Arch isn?t planted any deeper than existing soil level.
- Do not cover the base of the plant with soil or mulch.
Featured Plant: Aranda, Dianella caerulea
- Being a dwarf plant, it has amazingly compact form, with very tight rhizome growth and a small spread.
- Has lovely green foliage with deep blue flowers in spring and summer.
- This is a very tough and durable plant, with a high drought tolerance.
- The Dianella Aranda grows to 250-300mm tall and 350mm wide.
- Can grow in full sun to shade, handling coastal humidity and inland climates well.
- The best types of soil for the Aranda to grow in are sandy loam, clay loam, free draining clay soils and especially improved garden soils.
Featured Plant: Destiny, Dianella tasmanica
- This is the most cold-tolerant of all the variegated Dianellas.
- It grows to 35cm in height and 35cm in width.
- It has compact and striking foliage.
- Plant your Dianella Destiny in well mulched gardens, fertilizing in spring with a slow release fertilizer.
- The Dianella is also relatively drought tolerant, and only needs to be watered as required.
