Episode: Five
Date: 16th May
Story: Ozbreed Fabulous Plants
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Ozbreed is famous for their selections of tough strappy leafed plants, and this week Neville shows us some of their new releases which will brighten up any garden.
Featured Plant: Just Right, Liriope Muscari ?LIRJ?
Is truly ever-green, thus it retains its beautiful green foliage all year round.
It is beginning to replace older varieties in major landscapes, such as the Evergreen Giant.
Just Right maintains a consistent height of 45-50cm, which is very important for mass plantings. Its width is also 45-50cm.
Just Right produces white to light purple flowers.
It can tolerate full sun and moderate to heavy shade.
Almost no maintenance is needed, although it may need to be trimmed very occasionally.
Featured Plant: Isabella, Liriope Muscari ?LIRF?
It is the first Liriope to be used as a ground cover or true lawn alternative, producing dense and compact leaf foliage.
It spreads underground, stays really low and gets masses of amazing pink flowers during summer.
Isabella is drought and frost tolerant, and can grow in both sunny and shady positions.
To maintain in cooler areas, cut it back low to the ground in late winter. Isabella is very tough, so cutting it low won?t be harmful.
Isabella grows to a height of 40cm, with a spread of 50cm.
Only needs to be mowed or hacked back once per year.
Featured Plant: Amethyst, Liriope Muscari ?LIRTP?
Like its name, the flowers produced by the Amethyst are a deep purple which make a great feature during the summer months.
Amethyst grows well throughout Australia, from hot humid areas to cold areas.
If growing this plant in Melbourne or Canberra, it is a good idea to trim the foliage back each year in mid-late winter. This allows new shoots to emerge.
To use as a ground cover, you need to plant it much closer together than you would with Isabella.
Has dark green compact foliage, growing to an average size of 40cm by 40cm.
The Amethyst can tolerate full sun and moderate to heavy shade.
Featured Plant: Wyeena, Dianella tasmanica ?TAS300?
Wyeena is the new variegated form of the Dianella Tasmanica.
This plant has striking colour contrast as well as clean growing foliage.
Wyeena is best suited to the Southern areas of Australia, although it can still grow in Sydney and Brisbane and other humid climates.
This plant is the best variegated Dianella for tolerating frost, cold and dry weather.
To maintain, occasionally fertilize with a slow release fertilizer and remove older leaves and water as required.
The Wyeena grows to a height of 80-90cm and a width of 60-70cm.
Featured Plant: Pinnacle, Syzigium australe ?AATS?
Pinnacle is another practical new release by Ozbreed.
It is a narrow Australian Native Lilly Pilly, similar in shape to a Pencil Pine.
Pinnacle is the only cultivated narrow form of its kind in the whole of Australia.
It has lovely white flowers and pink fruits.
Due to its narrowness, it makes a very practical plant to grow along fence lines and walls or as a hedge.
Pinnacle requires very minimal pruning to stay narrow.
