If you've been dreading the thought of replanting a pony tail palm, you will realise just how easy it can be with the right tools and advice.

Neville's Tips and Facts

• Pony tail palms are one of the easiest plants to move and the great advantage of moving existing plants is that it brings instant maturity to the receiving garden.
• These succulent plants have a unique structure, a water storing bulbous base that has a myriad of roots pushing into the soil from every angle.
• A spade can be used to cut through these roots all round and then undercut to release the root ball.
• The biggest job is the lift, as these water storage organs are heavy, make sure to take care to prevent and back damage.
• It's a good idea to wear gloves as the strappy leaves are as sharp as can be and can easily cut your hands.
• When moving the plant keep it covered through the journey to reduce stress caused by excess wind stripping moisture from the foliage.
• Prepare the soil as you would for any new plant. Sandy soil is an advantage for succulent plants as it drains well. Organic amendments are good value.
• Place plant in new home and then set up wires and stakes to ensure no movement for a couple of months to allow the roots to take.
• Try a dose of seaweed extract to encourage root movement. Also, water around the base.
