River Friendly

Story Title: River Friendly
Episode 3: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 30th May 2010
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Winter rains will be here soon and fertilisers applied to the garden will wash into our rivers if you don't choose a fertiliser that is formulated to be river safe.

Trevor's Tips and Facts

  • There's some debate over whether you should be feeding your garden at the moment. The answer is plants feed all year round, often more in warmer months, although most of our natives grow at their fastest in autumn and winter when the rains come. The truth is plants feed small amounts everyday so it's not a bad idea to feed but be careful what you use, fertilising this time of the year can be incredibly harmful to the environment.
  • Excess fertiliser, particularly highly soluble forms such as granulated types can release all their food at once and it can leach down deep into the aquifer passing the roots. Our underground water naturally flows to the sea and into our rivers. Even worse is excess that runs off our gardens and driveways and roads washing into storm water drains and flowing directly into the river system.
  • SERCUL, the south east regional centre for urban landcare and their extensive research considered all the key criteria for a garden fertiliser and the fertilisers that are available through garden centres across WA.
  • Their research found only one organization was producing fertilizers that could be considered environmentally friendly considering our rivers fragile ecosystems.
