Palmetto Lawn

• Palmetto is a beautiful, emerald green, soft leaf buffalo that is a very easy care lawn. It is a waterwise variety that will handle sun or shade and is well suited to Perth's climate.
• It is a good time to install Palmetto as with winter rains and cool temperatures less water is required to establish the lawn. The Water Corporation encourages turf installation at this time of year to avoid excess water use if established during the warmer seasons.
• Palmetto has good cold tolerance and will keep green. It will continue to grow slowly over Winter and Spring and establish a good root system before summer.
• It is very important to improve the poor sandy soils with a good soil amendment. Preferably have 75 to 100 mm of good lawn mix soil. It is recommended to add Palmetto Turf Underlay at the rate of 1 to 2 bags per 10 sq metres mixed into the soil. This will add nutrients, organic matter and essential trace elements to help establish the lawn and keep it green all year round. Add Turf Start organic fertiliser and a wetting agent to the soil prior to laying the turf.

• Wet the soil and lay the turf in a stretcher bond pattern using a steak knife to cut and fit as necessary. Keep turf moist at all times. After laying, wet the turf and compact down with a plate compactor to form good contact with the soil. If necessary gaps can be filled with clean sand.
• Keep the turf well watered until established. The first 10 days are critical and then follow the recommended watering schedule from the turf supplier or the Water Corporation. Obtain a Certificate of Exemption from the Water Corporation on the Waterwise Helpline 13 10 39.
